I don't know why it happens, but it seems like many times I do laundry I have socks leftover without a match. I am thankful to know that I am not the only one this happens to though. :)
Over the years, I have tried many different methods of getting these socks reunited with their mate. Some of these have included just sending them back to the drawer, making a pile of them in the closet, and throwing them back in the hamper to be washed again in hopes that they will reunite on their own.
None of these methods really had me sold on them. Recently, however, I have found something I think I will stick with. I now have a basket on top of my dryer. When I am done folding laundry, the mismatched socks get tossed into the basket. I will sporadically grab this basket when I am folding socks (every few weeks or whenever the basket is full) and start matching up the mismatches. Any left that don't have a match go back into the basket for the next round.
Do you have any laundry tips you would like to share?

Good idea. I usually throw them back in the dirty clothes basket, except I never know if they actually find their match or not...most likely they both get lost :)
Thanks for the links :)
LOVE IT - I actually do the exact same thing - except it is a spare drawer in my bedroom (where I usually fold laundry!) Great minds think alike right! LOL!
I have a cubby area in our laundry room where I keep mateless socks. Every couple months I get my husband and son to go through their sock drawer and we have a "sock party" and try to match up socks. We usually pair up about a half dozen socks with their mates. We still have about 20 socks without matches right now...where do they all go? I have no idea.
Amy-
I wonder the same thing. Every once in a while I will find one that has been missing awhile - folded up in the corner of a spare fitted sheet, stuck in the pant leg of pants that haven't been worn since last season, behind the washer or dryer . . . I am always excited when I find one of these long term missing socks though!
Your method is what I do, as well. It's the only thing that seems to have worked.
I had this prolbem for years, then it hit me, if i pin them together with a safty pin, I want lose just one sock, if any gets lost it'll be both of them, plus they are already mated for you when you get the out of the dryer!! ( baby and kids socks are the worst to get lost)
