Sweet Potatoes :: Week 3

Here is a picture of one of my sweet potatoes. You should be able to see at least two of the little purple sprouts that are starting to break through.

The roots have also continued to grow. I didn't get a picture of them this week since I didn't want to chance breaking any off.

Here are the growing conditions for mine:
- Water is kept at a constant level and was changed a few times this week.
- House temp stays at a steady 66 degrees. (Warmer would probably help out.)
- By a window that gets only filtered sunlight. (The best I can do in my house.)

I would love to hear how your's are doing. Last week I checked out Sea 2 Shore's update on her blog. Wow! Hers really took off.

Here's a bit of a sneak peak of what will happen with those purple sprouts. This picture is from a sweet potato that was started a few weeks earlier than the others.

Our sweet potatoes have been transplanted into some very colorful pots;) The roots were becoming way to crowded in the water jars. We are mainly growing our for vining house plants. It all started when I told the girls that we grew some plants to take home to our moms for Mother's day out of Sweet potatoes. I did this way back in middle school so I just pray that I did it all right:) My MIL says it's near impossible to ruin a sweet potato plant so we are watching on pins and needles here. The roots were well over 8 inches when we transplanted them. Your's are coming along great!

Sea2Shore- I assumed that you started yours the same time I did . . . am I right on that, or did you start them earlier?

Also, I have heard of people that start them for house plants. I hear they make great ones!

Mrs. K's Lemonade Stand-
It is really is fun, and doesn't take much work. Let me know how they do!

I think I started mine around the same time as you. Maybe a few days before. We shall see how they turn out. There is a learning curve for everything:) Thanks for all your help with them.

I really love your blog. I don't know how I found it but I'm glad I did. I'm more of a city-girl with country ideas, meaning I love to cook and bake from scratch, spend time outdoors and penny pinch but only want to live a few miles from the modern conveniences in town. I love making homemade jams, applesauce and breads. I also love growing flowers but have only grown a few vegetables to eat. I'm going to try the sweet potatoes even if I'm getting a late start.

Amy-
I'm glad you enjoy my blog. Right now I'm actually a city girl too, although we have been wanting to get out into the country since we have been married (7 years). I think it has been an adventure to learn how to play country while being in the city! Have fun with your sweet potatoes!

sea2shore-
I'm still in this learning curve myself and definitely appreciate any input from others! This is the second year I have done this, but I didn't take very good notes (or any!) last year.

I did sweet potato slips last year from a store bought sweet potato. It worked out great and I got a bunch of sweet potatoes in August. They are nice plants and make beautiful flowers. I just got my slips going last week this year.

Hello!

I'm having a little trouble with my potatoes...although I'm not sure how I can goof something so simple up :)

I have 3 but only one is showing signs of little purple sprouts. Do you think the others are just delayed or do you think something isn't right?

Would love your thoughts.

Lindsie-Check out my new post. I don't know if it will help, but it might make you feel better. :)

Christy- I was also impressed by their flowers last fall. They are very pretty. I'd love to hear any tips you have to share.
